Leaked Crysis 2 Beta Hits Torrent Sites

by Mike Bendel February 11, 2011 @ 1:47 pm

Yikes, this could get messy. Internet reports indicate that a beta of Crysis 2 has leaked online. The 9GB download is spreading like wildfire across torrent sites, with gameplay videos already appearing on YouTube (soon to be removed by EA’s legal team, surely).

Judging from information obtained on the file timestamps, this leak is fairly recent, compiled on January 13. During gameplay, it displays a watermark that reads “Crytek – Internal Use Only. Not for Distribution” on several scenes. A sizable chunk of content is out in the open, including single player assets. In other words, it bears no relation to the public demo Crytek plans on releasing soon.

To add insult to injury, it also includes master key files relating to DRM routines, which handle online authentication — according to a user on Facepunch.

Crysis 2 is still a month out from release, scheduled to hit retail and e-tailers on March 22.

KezraPlanes says:

Some people just don't know when to stop. Piracy continues to reach new lows every day.

MenaceInc says:

The more I see of this game, the more it looks like a day 1 purchase for me.

KezraPlanes says:

One thing is certain. It looks DAMN good.

x3sphere says:

The gameplay vid looks amazing. That's only on medium too. It's a real shame this was leaked, though... I hope Crytek speeds up their plans to release the PC demo.

MenaceInc says:

Maybe this is the PC demo ;)

Adiuvo says:

It's definitely a day one purchase for me now. It's a shame about the leak but it's certainly good publicity.

KezraPlanes says:

Now that I think about might this not be another of those crazy EA publicity stunts?

x3sphere says:

I doubt it. I mean, this includes the entire single player campaign. It it was just one level I could see it being some kind of publicity stunt.

KezraPlanes says:

Oh... It's that bad? =\ I thought it really was just a beta or alpha...

MenaceInc says:

I was just joking. If they were going to do such a thing, EA wouldn't use a buggy build like this where textures are missing, etc

EDIT:

http://filesmelt.com/dl/1297448287764.jpg

god/crepuscular rays at only high settings? Oh yes. Was worried that it'd be a very high feature like before and may strain my system but this is looking good

FrozenIpaq says:

This will surely push up the plans/schedule for the demo. Very tempted to download this and try it myself on my hardware just to see how it runs (since I've been thinking about upgrading my GPU) but was waiting for a demo of the game until I decided. I'm away from my rig all weekend though since I'm at home (rig's at school). Guess I'll just wait

Zero says:

That brought a tear to my eye.

If crytek managed to get this running on current-gen hardware, holy shit.

EDIT: "It also includes the DRM Solidshield master key files, which only handles the online activation."

Oh crap, that's really got to suck for Crytek, it's practically the whole thing, even Sandbox.

Bran says:

I think I might DL the leaked PC version and buy the PS3 version when it comes out.

x3sphere says:

Compile date on the files shows January 13, so this is a fairly recent leak. A bunch of debug info is intact too. Wonder if Crytek was hacked and someone stole this off their servers.

Same thing happened to Valve awhile back before the release of HL2.

Seems like the leak is limited to DX9 only too. If the DX9 shots look this good I can't wait to see it in DX11.

Bran says:

Wow only DX9? sucks.

Zero says:

Ha, Facepunch went down with the excess of 10k guests. http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1059075-EA-Responds-To-Crysis-2-PC-Leak INFINITE LOOP

EDIT: But with the HL2 leak, the final product was way different from the leaked version, Crytek can't overhaul everything in just over a month. The leak will kill off some of they hype for the game, can't say if it will effect final sales.

Pokemanz master says:

Looking great so far for dx9.

LocutusEstBorg says:

Guys you have to try this. It supports split screen 3D. You can cross your eyes and see REAL 3D on ANY monitor (widescreen recommended obviously since the FOV is halved). The 3D is AWESOME. This is the best quality 3D IMO since unlike active shutter you see both images during the same frame. You can even go dual monitor with one screen for each eye!

---------- Post added at 12:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:35 AM ----------

You can put it in DX11 mode too. It's so awesome. Thanks to the leak it's now a day 1 purchase for me.

MenaceInc says:

That kind of 3D has never worked for me. Agreed though that the leak has influenced my decision to get it.

FrozenIpaq says:

Would've purchased this game regardless. I'm really just interested in how it plays on my hardware, something I can wait until the demo comes out to find out about.

El Xando says:

I've downloaded it, pretty goddamn awesome.

Couple bugs though that'd obviously to be expected :P

Rarely drops below 60 fps on the highest setting, though I have a pretty high end PC.

MenaceInc says:

For anyone in the UK, it's

FrozenIpaq says:

Something that has been annoying me recently: the ignorance of a lot of people:

http://i.picpar.com/31ad6e30bfd3e44ccc05a5ad60e3068af65164ea.jpg

1) EA is not blaming the PC community; EA is disappointed in the community for jumping on this leak

2) I fail to see anyway in which the PC version of Crysis 2 was damaged by the console versions or Xbox 360 exclusivity for the demo

3) Since when was Xbox 360 piracy as extensive and as large as PC piracy? NEVER...yet 50+ people seem to think so

MenaceInc says:

I prefer having my games on Steam though. Especially a series of games. I did buy Crysis at retail originally but got it again after a while on Steam when the price came down.

LocutusEstBorg says:

I pre-ordered BC2 on Steam for $60 for the bonus items or whatever thinking that the special edition wouldn't be available here and the day the game launched they were selling the special edition box for ~$20...

Robby says:

I had a lot of people on my friends list complain about how Crysis should have never went to consoles, so annoying. I just removed him, people like that just get on my nerves.

I played both the PC version and the xbox demo and enjoyed both of them.

Bran says:

Crysis 2 runs amazingly well. I do think it would be a game I'd rather play on the PS3 though.

That and I don't like playing multiplayer game on my PC much outside of Diablo like games.

x3sphere says:

You can force DX11, but it doesn't work. Gives a black screen during gameplay. Also the "hardcore" preset isn't configured properly, if you look at the debug info all settings except render quality are set to medium. Forcing higher settings via the system.cfg just results in a crash. So what we've seen from screenshots are two notches below max.

I will buy this day one too.

El Xando says:

So the hardcore setting is essentially the same as the Advanced setting?

x3sphere says:

Pretty much, going to hardcore only ups the render quality setting.

Nader says:

Would be cool if this was actually done on purpose.

El Xando says:

OK, anyone on here downloaded this? I'm seriously stuck on one of the missions...

MenaceInc says:

Might just be a dev build issue :P

FrozenIpaq says:

Think I read somewhere that the beta build has issues with a "chopper scene". You have to noclip through the area (press F3 twice I think).

El Xando says:

Yah, I was at a bit where I was getting shot by a chopper and there seemed to be nothing I could do.

Turns out the game had glitched out and there was supposed to be a guy gunning the turret (for me it was just unmanned...) so I had to go back to the previous mission and play through it.

Finally got past it now :)

x3sphere says:

I'm surprised you are actually playing through it :P I couldn't do that, working around bugs and dealing with crashes would ruin the experience for me.

El Xando says:

Ehhh, bugs aren't too bad, only crashes from time to time :P

I get lots of stuff failing to load, just because I'm guessing the files are missing.

Also, some stuff causing the game to come to a standstill for a while (for instance, using the toaster... a bit of toast pops up and the game freezes for a good 10 seconds before it resumes at normal speed :P)

Bran says:

Yeah, I deleted the beta because of the bugs and loading issues and just the general pain of working with such a broken project... Kinda funny, since if this was Bethesda, it would be a beta. It'd be the release build.

MenaceInc says:

New trailer looks awesome. Can't wait to get stuck into it. I'm waiting until release though :P

The music is so creepy with the two note phasing on violin overlapping the rest

jobegavin says:

I think that this leak will only help the sales of this game, the leak is so buggy that to try to play it is a waste of time but gives just enough of a taste to make you want to buy the game. I look forward to it's release, I will be getting it the first day. Don't be so quick to judge things as a negative. Torrents Rule!

FrozenIpaq says:

I caved in and tried it out for about an hour but stopped as I don't want to spoil anything / I have Dead Space 2 that I can play. Even with all the bugs I love this game...may go so far as to say I enjoy it more than the first one. The second I put the controller down I wanted more. I shall wait but it's going to be tough.

El Xando says:

Wow, I've played a fair amount but I still barely recognise a lot of that... Seems like this campaigns going to be pretty epically long :D

Go on, finish it... That way at least I have someone to talk about it with :P

I think I'm going to finish the buggy singleplayer, buy Crysis 1, finish that, then do Crysis 2 singleplayer again once it comes out :D

elite says:

They are already selling it here for 2$. It's funny how pirates are ruining the reputations of some game industries. Crysis 2 would have never get released as a beta.

El Xando says:

Well, I finished it :)

It's fucking awesome.

El Xando says:

I recorded this for anyone who likes spoilers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=immf8yKlWCI

Adiuvo says:

Does the game explain what happens to Nomad, Prophet, and Psycho?

El Xando says:

I'd never heard of Nomad or Psycho before now, and apparently they are from previous games. As far as I'm aware (though I could have missed it) they are not mentioned.

And it explains what happens to Prophet :)

Ayushari says:

Guyssssss.....Plz. Plz. Plz. dnt support this Beta and Buy the fresh new piece. I worked as a game Tester and i know How much difficult it to think about agame story...Work on it, make it, and after so much hardwork launch it...and u let to know PiRACY RUINED EVERYTHING......Plz. Dnt Support piracy.....

FrozenIpaq says:

I think the majority of the people in this thread have already pre-ordered the game or plan on purchasing it soon after. Piracy on the PC has actually started to go on a decline recently and I'm pretty confident that Crysis 2 will do great in retail, even on the PC

Bran says:

I might buy the PS3 version and I played the leaked Beta for a few days. I tend to think piracy helps sales in some instances. It's like a full demo that is really annoying to use most often. Kinda like shareware and ads, it annoys you into buying the full product to get that unhindered experience.
