Epic Games Emerges Victorious In Silicon Knights Legal Battle

Four years later, the long drawn-out legal battle between Epic Games and Silicon Knights has finally come to a close. The lawsuit pointed blame at Epic for failing to deliver adequate support for its Unreal Engine 3. Silicon Knights labeled the provided version of UE3 as broken, stating that it had to fix numerous engine bugs which ultimately resulted in repeat delays for Xbox 360 exclusive Too Human.

However, the court has found the claims to be baseless, ruling in favor of Epic Games on all counts. According to a Gamasutra report, that includes several counterclaims — Silicon Knights has been found guilty of breaching the Unreal Engine license agreement, misappropriating Epic’s trade secrets, and infringing on UE3 code.

Epic has been awarded $4.45 million in damages. Quite steep for a smaller studio like Silicon Knights. Hopefully, this verdict won’t put the rumored Eternal Darkness 2 in jeopardy.
