Sony Demos PS Vita Firmware 1.80, PSOne Downloads Coming In ‘Phased Rollouts’

by Mike Bendel on August 27, 2012 @ 6:51 pm

Update: It looks as if the firmware has already went live, check Network Update to download.

With firmware 1.80 hitting the PS Vita tomorrow, Sony’s taken the opportunity to walk users through the new features and UI tweaks introduced in the update, as shown in the video after the break.

Of note: using touch screen gestures to browse the Vita’s bubble-filled home screen is now optional, there’s an option that when enabled, allows users to use the directional pad to scroll through apps and games. Aside from that a convenient search bar has been added to the top right of the web browser. There’s a run-down of previously revealed changes here.

Additionally, Sony’s handheld product planning director Don Mesa says in the video that PSOne downloads are coming in “phased rollouts” every week. Given the lengthy wait for this functionality, it was thought that the compatibility list would mostly mimic that of the PS3 from day one, but it turns out that is not the case. The list of initial offerings include Arc the Lad, Cool Boarders 2, Final Fantasy VII, Hot Shots Golf 2, Jet Moto, Syphon Filter, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal 2, and Wild Arms — nine games in total. It’s worth noting this only applies to SCEA regions — those in Europe will have over 100 games to choose from.

Not a very impressive initial lineup for the NA region, at least in my opinion. Going to be updating my Vita though once the battery recovers from its deep sleep.

EDIT: Looks like PS One Classics are not on the store yet (guessing they haven't released them yet)

x3sphere says:

Yeah, not on the store yet, you can transfer some games from the PS3 though.

hush404 says:

Ugh, Not impressed with the shotty introduction of PS1 games. We've been waiting since Feb... and we get 9 lousy titles? That's weak... very, very weak.

x3sphere says:

Man the process of transferring games from PS3 to Vita is really convoluted. If the game has already been installed on your PS3 it won't let you copy it over, so you need to re-download it. I'm sure this is due to "security" but it really sucks for the end-user.

Trigun says:

It's RETARDED. Sony keeps making things more annoying than they NEED to be!

God, WHY can't it be like it was where all you had to do was install it and then you could transfer it if you liked. Now you have to basically keep 2 COPIES of the same game if you want to transfer it. What a fucking waste of space.

Seriously Sony, Change it back and while you are at it, fix the damn PSN Store, you should have a Library section like Steam making it SIMPLE and EASY for the average user to download and redownload titles. The download history is a pile of crap.

Not to mention this is still basically the same thing as the PS1 PSP emulator. They didn't even bother to remove the Splash screen saying it was for the PSP

Oh boy, an Emulator, Emulating an Emulator!

Also: Japan basically has the entirely library of PS1 games available while we get barely anything and the users are stuck Trial and Error testing Sony's Shit for them.
