The oft-rumored Steambox is now official: Valve’s went ahead and announced that a number of ‘Steam Machines’ are en route for 2014. The company is working with “multiple partners” to deliver a variety of hardware configurations. What’s more, is that a select number of Steam users, 300 to be exact, will be invited to beta test the hardware.

To apply for eligibility, Valve has posted a things of things you’ll need to do before October 25 on its official site.

Additionally, it would seem that restrictions on the Steambox are almost nonexistent. In contrast to the closed-down approach of Sony and Microsoft, the FAQ section mentions that the hardware will be hackable. Users will also be able to download the entire source code for SteamOS and modify it to their liking.

A whopping 3000+ games will be available during the beta period. Hundreds of titles are already running natively, according to Valve, though those that aren’t will be available to play via streaming.
