Koller: Ten Year Lifecycle For PSP, Future Iterations Possible

The PS2, released to market in 2000, is still going strong. After all, Sony promised they would support the console for at least ten years, and they’ve definitely kept true to that promise thus far. The company plans to support its handheld gaming device, the PSP, for just as long, according to marketing head John Koller:

We look at it just like our console business being a 10 year cycle, but we do see iterations as we go along to really adjust to the market. What we’ve done is the 2000 series adjusted to the market in terms of making it more portable. What we’re seeing now, at least in the near- to mid-term, is going to be firmware updates that add features and other functions that the consumer’s asked for.

Not surprising one bit. The PSP still has much untapped potential, which will undoubtedly be further exploited by firmware upgrades and the like. What’s interesting, though, is Koller mentioning that we may see future iterations of the handheld. Perhaps we’ll see a PSP-3000 down the road if the market demands it.

Neat.
PSP-3***?

Hell I'm waiting XD

Kwipper says:

How about in this version they introduce a web browser that doesn't suck.

No_One_In_Partic says:

Like they need a new version to do that.^ But yeh - the browser could very easily be so much better.

In truth I'm glad they're going the various iterations route, as we who own the originals will be able to enjoy many of the new features, where as if they just brought out a new console we'd all be left for dust.

(Oh dear, my name's fucked!)

RJC4LIFE says:

What kind of untapped potential do you think it still has? It's hard to think of anything more than this wonder machina can pull off..but then again,Sony still has to release firmwares and apps that emulate some of the homebrews we have already...j/k

Anyways... I'll be waiting for PSP-3000 if there's any. I'm not planning on getting a slim since it's no diff from the phat(except the extra ram which is not THAT useful nor is the tv-out or extra nand space). There's currently no reason at all for me to get a PSP-2000 by wasting 200bucks.

x3sphere says:

Well, I'd like to see Flash 9 support, the ability to access the PS Store directly from our PSPs (which is supposed to be coming, eventually), and some integration with Home.

No_One_In_Partic says:

Yeh, the browser could do with a few more options too
-An option to block certain images (which would work like how you currently save an image)
-Copy/paste!

Then there's all the various audio and video formats which still aren't supported.

Perhaps the future iterations will use UMD's compatible with ours?

There's also the fact, the homebrew scene (for the most part) tend to develop for both at the moment, hopefully it will be like-wise for the third iteration and so forth. So we won't be left with half-working emulators/apps and be told to upgrade if we want them to work properly...and as things get developed for the 3000 or whatever series, we'll have people seeing if they could somehow work on the previous models (like Skype>Furikup).

I dunno, it's 8AM, I'm probably talking shite.
