Rumor: Mortal Kombat Development Team Leaving Midway

Amid news that Midway may be considering to sell off its long-running Mortal Kombat series to the highest bidder, sources to close to Kotaku say that a number of developers working on the franchise are considering to jump ship and leave Midway.

Reportedly, one of the driving factors behind the move is the fact that many involved in the development of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe were not paid suitable bonuses for meeting internal sales targets.

When contacted for comment regarding the matter, Midway representatives assured that the team was in “good shape.” They further noted that the company itself was not refusing to pay bonuses, rather it was ongoing pressure from creditors preventing them from doing so.

Of course, if the MK team decides to leave Midway, the MK license will not stay with them, unless Midway decides to let go of the franchise. Mortal Kombat is one of its oldest intelligence properties, spanning a legacy of 17 years. It’s safe to say any sudden shakeup in staff has the potential to deal a severe blow to Midway.

The harsh economic climate has not been kind to Midway over the past year, forcing them to close their Austin, Texas-based studio and scrap several in-development projects while maintaining a focus on core properties.
