Square-Enix: PS3, Xbox 360 not profitable

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Square-Enix honcho Yoichi Wada talked about the current state of the video game market. Wada thinks that next-generation consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360 are out of place in today’s market. More specifically, he feels that
both consoles are neglecting the casual gamer – by requiring an HD television, a broadband connection, and a "deep knowledge of gaming" to fully enjoy the console.

And that’s why Square-Enix has put the focus on handhelds. After announcing the ninth installment in its Dragon Quest series exclusively for the Nintendo DS, this should really come as no surprise.

Does Wada think these next-generation consoles will ever pick up steam? You bet. He says in a year or two they should fare better which, consequently, is around the time Square-Enix plans to release Final Fantasy XIII.
