June NPD: Xbox 360 Sales Soar

Microsoft’s sleek new Xbox 360 hardware revision topped the charts in June, retail tracking firm NPD revealed today. Trailing not far behind was Nintendo’s Wii, followed by the PS3, which shifted 304,800 units. On the whole, all hardware platforms saw a significant uptick in sales over the dismal month that was May.

Despite this, overall industry growth still took a 6 percent hit compared to last year, a result of floundering portable hardware sales. A notable dropoff in software sales across all formats contributed to the decline as well.

“Looking at historical seasonality for the industry, total year U.S. revenues (of new physical sales) could come in anywhere between $18 and $21 billion,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

“Given the strong slate of content still to come, and the release of the Move and Kinect controllers, which I believe will spark additional interest in gaming, I think we could see the total year new physical retail sales come in at $20B. We’ll also be reporting consumer reported sales of digitally distributed, rental and used games content to provide insight into those non-POS sources of game sales.”
