Codemasters CEO Thinks The Wii Is A Fad

Is the Wii a fad? The Wii has been out for over a year now and has yet to show decline in popularity, so it’s rather hard to think of it as a fad at this point. Still, Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens believes that the Wii is in fact a fad. Read his thoughts below.
I think this cycle has got a long way to go and it’s certainly not over. Anyone writing off Sony and Microsoft do so at their peril. I could give you an argument that says there’s going to be a ‘Wii 2’ pretty quickly because [Nintendo would need one] in order to sustain momentum over a 10-year period. And what type of software would it have then? Because right now it isn’t driven by technological supremacy or power. I wonder if the idea of opening up a whole new audience to 60-year-olds looking to make sure their brain cells don’t die off is a sustainable form of entertainment. Maybe they got it right because we are all an aging population in Western markets, but I somehow think as a form of entertainment that won’t be the case.
I don’t see this generation lasting 10 years so an upgraded Wii, or Wii 2, isn’t likely in my book. Even if the current generation did last 10 years — Sony and Microsoft would likely have to release a next-generation PlayStation and Xbox to sustain momentum as well. In short even if the Wii is a fad, I think it has enough momentum to carry itself through this generation. In the end none of us know what will happen in the next few years so it’s hard to say, but we’ll see.
