Bungie Talks Destiny

Destiny

Today Bungie has revealed the first details of their post-Halo project, Destiny. Following their departure from Microsoft, Bungie signed 10-year publishing deal with Activision.

Set on a post-invasion Earth and its surrounding solar system, Destiny will be a persistent world shooter where players are free to explore. You play as a Guardian, a defender of the last city left on Earth. Above the last city however is a large spherical object known as the Traveler.

The Traveler bestows special abilities on the Guardians, allowing them to travel throughout the solar system and granting the player the option of different character classes. As a Guardian it is your mission to regain control of the Earth from the alien invaders.

Throughout your journey the game will seamlessly match you up with other players in public areas. Bungie refuses to call the game a MMO and prefers the term of “shared world.”  The game will pair you up with other players automatically while you are progressing through the game, thus requiring a persistent online connection like Diablo III. Just like DiabloDestiny will not require an online subscription like other MMO titles.

Details are still sparse on game mechanics and very little footage has been shown. You can catch a glimpse of the game in the video above and the philosophy behind the 10-year game. Other members of the press were invited to Bungie studios to get an overview of the new game and have noted that they too have seen no more footage than we have or any explicit details on how some of these game mechanics may work.

There are a lot more details about the game that many other websites have covered, including One of Swords, Joystiq, and  Kotaku.
