Nintendo Shifts A Mere 160K Wii U Units In April-June

Wii U
Nintendo has come forward with its financial highlights for the fiscal period ending April-June, and while the company on the whole turned a profit, Wii U performance is rather dismal. A total of 160,000 units were moved worldwide over a period of three months – from April to June.

Japan accounted for 90K of sales, while the Americas and other territories took the remaining 60K and 10K, respectively. Nintendo believes the lack of “key first-party titles” is partly responsible for the sluggish performance.

To date, 3.61 million consoles have been sold worldwide. Despite the slow sales, Nintendo is still expecting to move 9 million units by the end of its fiscal year on March 31. It all seems rather optimistic given the impending arrival of PS4 and Xbox One this holiday season, but there’s no denying that Nintendo’s own franchises carry massive weight. The question is, will they be enough to move that many units alone with some third-parties tapering off support – at least in the interim. Interesting times ahead.
