Rockstar Games have revealed today the first look at the multiplayer within Grand Theft Auto V, aptly named GTA Online. With GTA Online players will be able to jump into a persistent online world with 15 other players and complete a variety of different activities together. Races, heists, deathmatches, and all your traditional modes are found in this new persistent world.

It is separate from your progress in the main story line of the game but borrows some characters and elements for use in multiplayer. You’ll be able to choose checkpoints for a race and challenge everyone else to a race, whether it is on the ground, in the air or on the water (sorry no submarine racing apparently).

Grand Theft Auto V is currently scheduled to be released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms on September 17th, roughly a month away. However, early reports suggest this multiplayer component may not be available right at launch, instead it’ll come a few weeks after launch. Check out a glimpse of what’s to come with the new trailer, available right up top.
