GTA V Writer Dan Houser Would Like to Make a Bully Sequel

Bully

When Rockstar Games launched Bully back in 2006, the game was met with plenty of critical acclaim. Of course, this was following months and months of controversy prior to launch at the hands of the news media, when pundits were quick to vilify the game and dub it a bullying simulator. As it turns out, though, Rockstar’s Dan Houser would like to someday make a sequel to Bully, which makes all the sense in the world considering it was a damn good game.

“I know I want to,” said the Grand Theft Auto V writer in an interview with Polygon. “Well, hopefully, you never know. There’s a lot of directions I could go with that one, it’s funny.”

Houser explained that some people have suggested Bully protagonist Jimmy Hopkins star in a Grand Theft Auto game as an adult down the road. According to Houser, though, that wouldn’t make sense, as Jimmy was never a low-life who’d eventually steal cars and run over people mercilessly. The kid was tough, but that was due to his upbringing — he still had morals.

“He was an unpleasant soul, but he had a heart,” stated Houser. “To some extent you could say the same was true of [Grand Theft Auto 4’s] Niko in a bizarre way. But [Jimmy’s] not trying to burn down the school, he’s more trying to stand up to injustice.”

Bully is one of those great games that was able to feature some neat gameplay mechanics, and it even borrowed a lot from the Grand Theft Auto games. Even then, it managed to take those borrowed elements and put them in a wholly original, unrelated package. I sincerely hope we do get a sequel someday, because it would have the potential to be one hell of a ride.
