Gears of War 2 is well on track to making its mark as one of this year’s best-selling video game blockbusters. Microsoft sent out a press release today boasting that weekend sales for the title topped 2 million units.

“We were so excited to launch ‘Gears of War 2’ on the same day all around the world, something virtually unheard of in the games business,” said Cliff Bleszinski, design director at Epic Games. “We wanted our fans, no matter where they live, to have a shared experience on day one, and that’s exactly what’s happened.”

According to internal data, more than 1.5 million folks signed onto Live during the weekend, shattering the record for concurrent Live subscribers. Combined, players unlocked more than 19 million achievements total and gameplay hours came in at around 15 million.
