Valve today launched a new initiative dubbed Steam Trading Cards that aims to reward users for playing games on Steam. Those that elect to opt-in to the beta can begin earning trading cards by simply playing any of the supported titles, which currently include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, DOTA 2, Portal 2, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, and Don’t Starve.

These trading cards aren’t simply for show or bragging rights, as having some on hand allow you to craft Steam badges, which net you “marketable items like emoticons, profile backgrounds, and coupons.” You can also level-up badges to earn “profile showcases, extra friends list slots, and more.”

To complement the beta launch, Steam profile pages have also been given a fresh new look, giving a broader view at a user’s activity. Level data is now displayed, along with any earned badges as well as a more concise overview of any recently played games. You can learn more by hitting up the FAQ page on Steam’s site. Sounds like an interesting and more meaningful spin on the whole achievements system.
