Ouya Not Delivering Massive Sales Success for Games

Ouya

The Ouya’s gotten off to quite the slow start since its recent launch. This doesn’t appear to be one of those “it’ll get better” situations, either. Ya know, the kind Nintendo often boasts and ends up experiencing (just look at the 3DS — things got quite better). Well, it doesn’t look that way yet, at least.

According to IGN, most developers who’ve released content on the Ouya have made between $500 and $6,000. Those certainly aren’t big numbers, and a few devs have reported even fewer sales, stating that folks have stuck with the free demos of their games rather than purchasing the full versions.

It should be noted that the Ouya is apparently really easy to develop games for. It doesn’t take devs that long to port their content over to the Android console, so even with the low income gained, many are still making a slight profit.

TowerFall, created by Matt Thorson, has easily had the biggest success on the Ouya. At $15 per unit, the game has managed to turn out 2,000 sales — that equals out to $21,000 after Ouya gets its share. Not a bad turnout, though that’s not the case for every studio.

It’s hard to tell where the Ouya will go from here. A lot of folks think it won’t succeed at this point, and that’s actually kind of a fair assumption given the circumstances. Of course, like always, and as the old adage (read: cliche) goes, only time will tell. Well, time and sales. Seriously, the sales are probably the most important factor here.
