Wii U Name Not A Factor In Dismal Sales, Says Reggie

Nintendo has been facing an uphill battle when it comes to convincing consumers of a Wii U purchase, and some have pinned blame on the name of the device. An ongoing argument is that average joes may initially think of the Wii U as an add-on.

Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime doesn’t think so, though. He’s adamant that the Wii U’s sales issues have nothing to do with the name. Instead, it’s 100% down to a lack of content, says Reggie in a Kotaku interview:

The challenges we’re facing with Wii U are not issues of the name. The issue is the lack of a steady rate of software launches to motivate the consumer to drive buzz and engagement and to highlight the wide variety of uses of the GamePad. That’s the issue.

Personally, I agree with Reggie. There may be a perception issue with the Wii U, but anyone that doesn’t understand that it’s an entirely new system probably isn’t the type of gamer that would buy one right now, even if it was called the Wii 2 or whatever.

That being said, you have to wonder why Nintendo didn’t hold back the system and wait until it had more compelling experiences that take full advantage of the GamePad. By now, they should know having a robust software lineup is key, especially for a system where the peripheral is the main draw.
