Nintendo has been busy with the Zelda series as of late. In addition to The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the company is also prepping for the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. It turns out this remake came to be as part of an experiment — an experiment that also included HD versions of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

“When we were thinking about the new Zelda for Wii U, which is something we’re actually working on, we needed to experiment with a variety of graphic styles and it was part of that process we took some existing Zelda games and made them HD just to see what would happen,” explained series producer Eiji Aonuma in an interview with Polygon. “In doing so we realized that the Wind Waker graphic style, the art style, really represented well on the Wii U given the graphic capabilities of the new system. It really brought that world to life.”

It’s great to know that a new Zelda is already in the works for the Wii U. How that title will end up looking graphics-wise is still a total toss-up as Nintendo isn’t ready to bring any of that info to light just yet. As far as HD remakes of Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess are concerned, though, Aonuma isn’t ruling out the possibility just yet, though he admitted to not having the time to do so at the moment.

“I can’t say that the possibility is zero that those will be made into HD, but right now I need to work on the next installation in the series so I don’t have the bandwidth to do that right now,” stated Aonuma. “But maybe it will happen if someone else does it.”
