Conker’s Bad Fur Day Dev on Nintendo and Microsoft

Conker's Bad Fur Day

The latest issue of Nintendo Force Magazine (as shared by Destructoid) features quite the telling interview with Chris Seavor, who previously worked on Conker’s Bad Fur Day. The dev shared some of his experiences as a Rare staff member, delving deep into what it was like working with both Nintendo and Microsoft.

According to Seavor, there was an innate trust between the folks at Rare and Nintendo. “I’m not even sure they [Nintendo] knew what they really had with Conker,” he said in the interview. “Tim [Stamper] and Chris [Stamper] did and they said, ‘Yes, we want to make this.’ And such was the trust between Rare and Nintendo that they were fine with that … Trust. A lovely concept, sadly lacking today with some publishers.”

That same level of trust was absent with Microsoft, though. While the company initially said Rare could be run the way it used to, that soon changed. “‘Production managers’ started to appear, asking all sorts of banal questions (not you Alison, we liked you),” explained Seavor. “More and more strange people were appearing in the corridor, like a parade of eggs with eyes, wanting to see the game … You’d strike up a friendship, develop a rapport and then that person was gone and replaced by someone you didn’t know. Then Tim and Chris left, there were more changes, then even more changes, then I didn’t care anymore.”

Rare was always one of my favorite studios growing up, and I know I’m not alone. It’s a damn shame those folks didn’t get the respect they deserved following their acquisition at the hands of Microsoft. Thankfully, this rather harsh-sounding experience didn’t discourage Seavor from continuing to make games, as he is currently toiling away on The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup along with fellow ex-Rare dev Shawn Pile.
