Sony put on a great showing at its E3 conference this year, excitement was high, but ultimately most of us were not surprised with majority of the announcements at hand. Why? Well, for a simple reason: we already knew about them. PSPgo and The Last Guardian, Team ICO’s new title, were both unofficially revealed days prior to the show. Sure, the motion controller was somewhat of a surprise announcement, but since rumors had been pointing to such a device for months it was far from unexpected.

Rightfully so, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton is disappointed over this, leading him to lament over the state of confidentiality in this industry in an interview with CNBC:

People don’t respect confidentiality in this industry. It’s tough enough to keep a secret within your own company, much less when you speak to third parties.

This is an industry that has trouble focusing on today. We want to constantly talk about tomorrow.… You have to prepare for people to know things in advance. The frustrating thing is they only know a part of the story and that opens up a lot of conjecture and misinformation that ultimately waters down the reality when you roll it out.

On the flip side, are early leaks all that bad in the grand scheme of things? Sure, shock value is diminished but on the plus side it does generate interest in a product before it is announced, all without marketing dollars being spent. Most of the time, anyway. I suppose the larger problem at hand is that sometimes this interest transitions over to misinformation, which can create unrealistic expectations in turn.
