Ubisoft Places Faith In 3D, Expects 50 Percent Market Penetration By 2012

Stereoscopic 3D is already being heralded as the “next big thing” by some. The skeptical side of us says it’s too early to say yet. Logistics aside, publisher Ubisoft believes that the tech is rife with potential. During a conference call earlier this week, company head honcho Yves Guillemot noted his belief that 15-20 percent of titles will adopt the tech by next tech, with a total coverage of 50 percent to follow by 2012.

I think next year we should see maybe 15-20% of games will be 3D on next-gen consoles … and the following year will be at least 50% of the games.

3D tech is obviously still in its infancy — and TV sets capable of displaying it are not exactly affordable for the average consumer yet. However, in a year or so, the pricing landscape should change for the better. If other publishers have similar attitudes towards the tech, perhaps Guillemot’s forecast on adoption rates is not as far-fetched as it may seem at first glance.

Nintendo is already positioning itself as a huge proponent of 3D tech, as evidenced by the announcement of its upcoming 3DS handheld. Additionally, a firmware update is set to bring 3D to the PS3 later this June as select titles will begin to utilize the tech.
