Cosmos X2 DSiWare Bound

Update: We caught up with Saturnine’s Edward Di Geronimo earlier today, who told us that “development is finished,” further noting that the company is gearing up to release Cosmos X2 later this year.

Saturnine Games today let us know that its 2D shoot em’ up Cosmos X2 is slated to hit Nintendo’s DSiWare service. A horizontal-scrolling space shooter, the title features a dual weaponry mechanic, allowing players to switch between two weapon systems at any given time.

In a strategic twist, the operational state of your spaceship correlates directly to weapon usage. Exhausting both energy meters will result in a quick and sudden death. Staying alive is essentially a balancing act, which certainly adds to the tension while also occupied with gunning down dozens of extraterrestrial foes. Your inactive weapon recharges while not in use, absorbing energy from fallen foes.

There are three distinct weapon systems to choose from, all of which are detailed below:

Power – high powered shots that fire straight ahead. The shield surrounds your ship in explosions that vaporize bullets and damage enemies.

Attraction – weak, rapid fire shots that home in on enemies. The shield draws in enemy fire and regenerates health with each shot absorbed.

Repulsion – fires three shots that spread apart. Hit an enemy with all three shots to deal heavy damage. The shield reflects bullets back at the enemies, turning their own shots against them.

Backed by a mechanic that tasks players with strategizing their actions, Cosmos X2 sounds like it is shaping up to be a solid on-the-go shooter. Saturnine has yet to stamp down a firm release date.
