SCE Shuhei PSP2 Development

Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios (WWS), told Develop Magazine that they are bringing Worldwide Studios into hardware development. WWS serves as Sony’s own network of game developers who will now help in the development of hardware, primarily new unannounced hardware.

This move of cooperation between the hardware and software developers was one of the first moves taken by Kaz Hirai when he took over for Ken Kutaragi as President of Sony Computer Entertainment. Oddly enough, last year Hirai stated that the Playstation 3 console is hard to develop for on purpose. It seems as if they’ve taken a step away from that philosopher and are now looking for more developer input into their hardware.

Also found in the interview, Yoshida says that they are already “undergoing many activities that we haven’t yet been talking about in public. Some future platform related activities.” Could he be hinting at the development of the long-rumored PSP2? Whatever it is, Sony is already looking towards the next generation.
