God of War Dev Says PSP Was A Doomed Platform

Ready at Dawn co-founder Ru Weerasuriya has lashed out at the PSP, telling CVG that it “was doomed from the very get-go.” Although careful not to elaborate on any specifics, he called Sony’s supposed mishandling of the platform natural as “it’s the first one.”

It was doomed from the very get-go. There are some things which aren’t conductive to calling it a true portable gaming platform and calling it a connective platform, although it has wi-fi.

There’s so many things that publishers and the manufacturer and Sony dropped the ball on – it’s natural, it’s the first one.

That hope that you can have is that they learn from that experience when they make the next one, and that they solve the issues with the PSP and the PSPgo – and also that they learn from what the others are doing.

Weerasuriya’s reflections aren’t all doom and gloom. He notes that the PSP is “a good platform and you can make amazing things on it,” alluding to RaD’s experience with developing several hit titles.

With 60 million units sold worldwide and counting, the PSP is obviously a success for Sony. With that said, we’ve long known that devs haven’t been happy with it for various reasons, so these statements are hardly surprising. From here on out, what matters is that Sony makes an effort to address such concerns with the PSP2. Judging from what’s been said so far, they’re on the right track.
