Pachter Changes Tune On PSP2, Says It Could Succeed ‘If Priced Right’

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter recently lashed out at the PSP2, calling it ‘dead on arrival’ in the wake of low-priced software offerings for Apple’s bustling iPod Touch platform.

He’s since clarified those statements to trade site IndustryGamers, saying that PSP2 could perform well if it’s priced right and boasts a competitive feature set. However, he pointed to Sony’s handling of the PSPgo as the reason for his earlier burst of pessimism.

We can’t rule out the ‘dead on arrival’ PSP2, which is likely to be introduced [next year], and if it has the right feature set and is competitively priced, it could actually perform well in the marketplace. My ‘DOA’ comment was based upon an assessment that Sony won’t price it right (look at the PSPgo), but of course, I have been wrong once or twice before, so maybe they’ll surprise me.

It seems unlikely that Sony will repeat the mistakes it made with the PSPgo, which has largely been regarded by the company as an “experiment.”
