Call of Duty 5 Named, Features Co-op Play

The first details on Activision’s latest installment in the Call of Duty series hit the internet today, courtesy of UK-based rag gamesTM.

According to the magazine’s report, Call of Duty 5 will launch under the title “Call of Duty: World at War.” Treyarch of Call of Duty 3 “fame” is handling development duties instead of Infinity Ward, as expected, with the game taking place in the Pacific during World War II. The multiplayer aspect of the game will feature cooperative play, in addition to vehicles and squad-based elements.

The mag further reports that World at War is in development for all current console platforms (PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii) and surmises that the Zapper-compatible Wii edition, visually, will look closer to its next-gen counterparts than any other Wii title currently on the market. Additionally, the game is said to have a super-gritty, mature feel to it. Here’s a brief description of the opening sequence:

The opening scene of the first level we are shown is a Japanese commander stubbing a cigarette out in the eye of a prisoner before slitting his throat – the blood splatters and dribbles down the side of the tent you are being held in. He turns towards you to deal out the same treatment but help arrives just in time. Cue a daring level-long escape.

Brutal. Look above for a scanned screenshot of the game. It is said to be running on Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 4 engine.

CoD5 has co-op, vehicles in multiplayer, CoD4 engine, every format apart from PSP
