Q-Games President Dylan Cuthbert weighed in on Nintendo’s current situation with the Wii U. It’s no secret that the platform has struggled to really find its place in the hardware market, and with a current lack of titles, it’s hard to argue in its favor. Cuthbert believes that the Wii U needs a powerful new IP, but he also thinks that if anyone can pull off a comeback, it’s Nintendo.

“I think software,” stated the head of the PixelJunk developer in an interview with Siliconera. “If they are going to win they are going to have to figure out the games. They probably need like new super IP, a special IP that makes people really interested. But they always come up with something. They are always very innovative.”

“Even with the DS when it first came out people said that’s not very good and it’s not going to do very well, but it sold hundreds of millions and had lots of innovative titles,” continued Cuthbert. “I think they will find something that will sell a lot. Who would have known Wii Fit would have sold like 15 million units?”

Is Cuthbert on to something here? Could a new IP be exactly what Nintendo needs to succeed with the Wii U? The 3DS sure as hell wasn’t off to hot start, but it eventually began selling more units and it’s now a handheld worth owning. Could a “system seller” be what saves Nintendo’s current platform as Microsoft and Sony announce their new hardware plans for the foreseeable future?
