Update #2: Sony has since pulled the firmware amid numerous reports of this update rendering PS3 units inoperable (aka brick). No word on the possible cause. We’ll keep you posted as more news comes in. For now, if you’ve already downloaded the firmware, it’s advisable to hold off on installing and stay on 4.41.

Update: PS3 firmware 4.45 is now available on Network Update.

All the hubbub surrounding PS4 doesn’t mean Sony has stopped churning out system software updates for the PS3. The company announced via Twitter just moments ago that PS3 firmware 4.45 is due out shortly.

It’s a little more substantial than the last few updates, too, promising trophy notification options as well as the usual stability improvements. We suppose this means users will have the ability to disable in-game trophy pop-ups, something that has been requested for far too long. Hey, better late than never!

New firmware usually drops in the evening hours, so expect this to hit Network Update very soon. We’ll update you once it’s live.
