So Fez 2 Has Been Canceled

Fez 2

Well, this kind of blows. Phil Fish has apparently canceled Fez 2, the recently announced sequel to his original hit indie gem. It all started with the latest edition of Invisible Walls on GameTrailers, where both Fish and Jonathon Blow were criticized by host Marcus Beer, also known as the Annoyed Gamer.

The Fez creator subsequently went on a Twitter rant, going so far as to tell Beer to kill himself. That’s hardly a mature remark, but then again, Fish has been known for being highly emotional and making extreme comments on the social media site. Several frustrated tweets later, the dev stated, “im done. FEZ II is canceled. goodbye.”

At first it seemed as though this was all an empty angry threat, but then the following tweet appeared courtesy of the Polytron account: “It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that FEZ II has been cancelled and is no longer in development. We apologize for the disappointment.”

Disappointment indeed. It’s a shame that it all had to come to this. Fish previously stated that he enjoyed Twitter and that he hated the video game industry. He’s also been very vocal about his disdain toward unprofessional writers who turn anything into a story without facts.

Personally, I really like Fish, and I think he’s one of the brilliant minds in this industry. Is he a little hotheaded? Of course he is! There’s no doubt about that. It’s just unfortunate that something so many of his actual fans were looking forward to has been canned as a result of the comments made by his detractors.

When you think about it that way, those of us who appreciate Fish, all of his hard work, and the lovely Fez license have just lost something that could’ve been special. Meanwhile all of those detractors have won the battle and possibly even the war. Damn shame.

Here’s hoping Fish changes his mind down the road, both for his real fans and for himself.
