It’s official, Gearbox’s addictive open-world RPG Borderlands has reached double platinum status. The revelation was revealed as part of a investors conference call wrapping up year end results, with publisher Take-Two stating that two million copies of the title had been sold to date. Also, Take-Two once again reiterated its intentions to expand on the concept of Borderlands and make it a “key franchise,” meaning future installments down the road are a certainty.

Borderlands from 2K Games has now sold over 2 million units worldwide and has established itself as a key franchise for Take-Two, for which the Company has long-term publishing rights.

Further to this, Take-Two chief financial officer Lainie Goldstein noted that 33 titles in are currently in development across the publisher’s wide array of studios, which notably include BioShock 2 and Max Payne 3. More interesting, however, is the fact that a new title is planned for release in Q4 2010. Goldstein did not comment on the status of its title and as such its significance in relationship to the company’s overall portfolio is unknown at this point. We suppose details will be dropped when the time is right, as usual.
