2K Games today announced that its Marin studio is hard at work on a revival of XCOM, taking the classic strategy franchise in a bold new direction: the first-person shooter space.

Due out “exclusively” on Xbox 360 and PC, the title propels the franchise into the first-person shooter space – territory all-too familiar for BioShock 2 creators 2K Martin. Combining bits of strategic elements with a gripping narrative, players assume the role of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating a growing threat.

2K says the move to a first-person perspective will immerse fans into a re-imagined universe, calling the experience tension-filled and fear-evoking as players combat a “faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.”

A release date for XCOM  has yet to be announced.
