Crytek Taking Stereo 3D “Very Seriously”

You can add Crysis developer Crytek to the growing list of developers backing the implementation of stereo 3D. Speaking in a recent interview with Develop, Crytek’s Engine License lead Carl Jones says the studio is taking the technology “very seriously,” offering insight as to why he thinks 3D is the next big thing:

It certainly adds a lot to a number of games. Depth perception in an FPS really changes the game and makes it a lot more enjoyable. I think people are starting to wake up and take notice that 3D is on its way, it’s not long before developers are taking advantage of it.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli added that his studio is working closely with Microsoft and Sony on the Natal and Move range of motion controllers. This should not come as much of a surprise, considering CryEngine 3 — the company’s multi-platform middleware — was developed with alternate methods of input in mind, beyond conventional controllers.

The PS3 will receive a firmware update enabling 3D support in select titles this June, making it the first console to support the tech. Crysis 2 is due out later this year on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
