Sandbox delight Minecraft will make the leap from alpha to beta later this month, December 20 to be specific, creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson announced today.

With the transition comes a “larger focus on polish and content.” Key enhancements in store include “proper modding support with a stable API,” according to Persson. Also planned for inclusion is “non-intrusive” narrative to give new players a lowdown on the basics, akin to an in-game tutorial.

Additionally, hitting beta signals a higher price point: the normal cost will be bumped from €9.95 to €14.95, which equates to around $20. Gift codes will roll out before the price hike, which should come as good news to any last-minute holiday shoppers.
