DICE: No Plans for Battlefield 3 Mod Tools

There’s no question that the ability to mod is always a crowd pleaser when it comes to PC titles. Unfortunately, as it stands – Battlefield 3 will ship without any mod tools, according to EA Europe VP Patrick Söderlund.

Söderlund pinned the decision down to the complexity of Frostbite’s inner workings, the engine that powers BF3. He feels the steep learning curve associated with setting up destruction in maps and leveraging other engine facets will present too much of a challenge to your average hobbyist.

“As of now, we are not going to make any modding tools,” said Söderlund in an interview with German site GameStar.

“If you look at the Frostbite engine, and how complex it is, it’s going to be very difficult for people to mod the game, because of the nature of the set up of levels, of the destruction and all those things… it’s quite tricky. So we think it’s going to be too big of a challenge for people to make a mod.”

Isn’t a challenge half the fun of modding? Whatever the case, DICE has its reasons, we suppose. However, if enough folks show interest, perhaps they will change their mind. It wouldn’t be the first time.
