The NPD Group has announced the software and hardware sales figures for the month of March, revealing that the video game industry amassed a shocking $1.7 billion in software and hardware sales — up 57 percent from last year.

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo’s mega-sequel Super Smash Bros. Brawl topped the software charts with 2.7 million copies sold. The company’s hardware sales were nothing to scoff at either, pushing 721,000 Wii units and 698,000 units of its Nintendo DS handheld during the same timeframe.
