Retro/Grade Takes Off Into Space, Shoots Its Way to PSN Today

If you’re in the market for an old school-inspired space shoot ’em up with a twist, then you’ll be glad to know that Retro/Grade is making its way to the PlayStation Network when Sony’s download shop updates later today. Developed by 24 Caret Games, Retro/Grade may appear to be your typical R-Type-influenced shmup at first, but it presents a highly unique formula: You start from the end of the game and make your way backward through time. It’s an interesting concept that combines nicely with the game’s rhythm elements to create a wholly different spin on the genre.
Retro/Grade features a campaign mode that has the standard leaderboard integration you might expect from a shmup like this, but get this, you can even use your good ol’ guitar controller if you want to. In addition to the campaign, 24 Caret Games threw in a challenge mode that has you going through levels from the campaign where you’re tasked with completing different objectives. There are 130 challenges in total, and completing them will unlock special bonuses such as new ships and even indie game character skins like Meat Boy and Octodad.
If you’re a fan of rhythm games or shmups, definitely watch out for Retro/Grade later today. It’ll be priced at $9.99 on the PlayStation Network, but if you shell out $14.99, you’ll also score the game’s soundtrack, which is pretty sweet. I can’t wait to enter the backward universe of Retro/Grade!
