Update: Firmware is live. Grab it via Network Update, or here’s a direct download link.

Late last month Sony released firmware 1.80 and PS Vita owners rejoiced, with the update finally adding support for emulated PSOne titles. Now, they’re following it up with an update that seemingly adds nothing. Firmware 1.81 is due out tonight according to a post on the official PlayStation Turkey page.

A changelog is absent and no further details are mentioned. If we had to take a guess, the firmware might patch up some underlying bugs and perhaps close any recently discovered exploits — like the ability to run VHBL through Monster Hunter.

Sony tends to shy away from providing any details when it comes to patching up security holes, so such a move really would not surprise us in the slightest. As always, we’ll update once the firmware is live.
