Former Epic Games director Cliff Bleszinski had some intriguing things to say about the video game industry. Speaking to GamesIndustry International, the developer stated, “This business has not been in a state of transition like it is right now since the video game crash of the ’80s. I really think we’re in a massive state of turmoil.”

It’s hard to argue with Bleszinski given just how insane things have gotten for gaming. We’re currently in an era that saw annoying DRM, disgusting online passes, and other gross flaws rise up and become mainstays of gaming. To say that this entertainment form is in “a state of turmoil” is certainly fitting, especially considering how frustrated so many fans and even some developers have been.

Bleszinski continued, making the bold semi-prediction that Nintendo might just cease making consoles and focus solely on making video games akin to Sega. “I think Nintendo could possibly be faced with the situation of becoming a company that only makes software moving forward,” he said. “I think Sony and Microsoft are about to come to major blows. But at the same time, people love playing games on their iPad.”

As far as PC gaming is concerned, the industry veteran thinks great things are happening in that sector. “The PC is going through a wonderful renaissance right now,” continued Bleszinski. “I think we’re ready to do digital download games all the time … I just want to see what happens.”

Whether you agree with Bleszinski or not, there’s no denying that the dude makes some strong arguments. I doubt Nintendo will call it quits in five years (which would ideally be after the Wii U has run its course), but it’s tough to say what will happen to the three major console manufacturers.
