Phil Fish Leaves Games Behind in Wake of Recent Events

Phil Fish

After canceling Fez 2 following a back-and-forth with industry veteran Marcus “Annoyed Gamer” Beer, Phil Fish announced via Twitter that he was done making video games. It’s one of those things you could kind of see coming, but at the same time, it’s hard to believe, even now.

“to be clear, im not cancelling FEZ II because some boorish f*ck said something stupid, im doing it to get out of games,” tweeted Fish. He then continued, “and im getting out of games because i choose not to put up with this abuse anymore.”

He also posted the following on the Polytron Corporation blog:

FEZ II is cancelled.
i am done.
i take the money and i run.
this is as much as i can stomach.
this is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign.

you win.

Personally, I think Fish may return to making games — and possibly even Fez 2 — somewhere down the road. Here’s hoping he does, because fans of the first game who’ve stuck behind the outspoken dev would certainly love to see more of his work.
